Actually Nate knowing my kids they would definitely be supportive and I wouldn't make a decision like that without their input and full understanding of the situation. Remember we are talking high school age here and I feel by that time my teens would be mature enough to have an opinion and know they have a right to speak out. I've taught them all that you don't stand by and watch anyone be bullied whether it's by another person or by an institution. That when one person is bullied, we are in fact all being bullied because it could be our turn next. I've in fact gone to bat with my oldest when she came to me about issues like this and helped her find her voice and added mine to it.

I would expect this young man and his dog will be in school very shortly. No school board likes to have the newspaper in their face as well as the threat of a lawsuit. I just dislike that they and their dumb, mindless decision making skills are the ones in charge of setting policy that affects young people. No one should have to be forced to do the right thing...that bugs me.

Looks like basic medical discrimination to me. If you have a service or guide dog, you need one and you only got one because it was doctor recommended or prescribed.

It's like medicine. Would the school have a problem if the poor kid was on crutches, used a cane or a wheelchair?

I love seeing guide and service dogs. I think it's awesome that those trained dogs can people mobility and confidence to go out and do "normal" things (shop at the grocery, go to the movies, go out to dinner, go to school!).

I hope that school board gets their buttcheeks handed to them.

Wow. dont tell me they tried to say some kids were allergic or scared? If you have such a phobia of dogs or were deathly allergic- the school would probably know about it already. Jesus that was w-e-a-k.

    Two things about this story:
1: Calgary has a LOT of rednecks. I'm pretty sure there are some parents still fans of Eugenics or something who wouldn't want that kid in school. Seriously.

2: The Calgary Sun is quite possibly the worst newsaper in existence - anything in the paper puts a conservative based bias on it, so you really have to take the Sun with a grain of salt. The one thing about it is that it doesn't hide its bias (well they call liberals FIBerals all the time :P)

This is really ridiculous but I think the Sun blew it out of proportion, because it wasn't as big of a story in the Calgary Herald. So I don't think this kid got to school last week to be met with "We'll get you and your little dog too!"

That's just awful... poor kid! People are so weird about animals sometimes... it's just sad. I don't get it. Hope that kid and his service dog are done right by soon!
