The way I understand it, they got the thumbs up from day one on getting the conditional use permit once the building was up and operational if they bought and built where and how the city planners told them. Only after some members of the community made an issue out of it did the city start looking for loopholes to stop them from being able to run their business. It seems that they just chose the wrong city, as Jeremy Stone's new facility was built in the same county just last year with not so much as a peep from members of that community.

Re: Latest news article on the sutherlands
This is a bothersome issue because no matter what you say or do people fear snakes. It is hard to understand the "power" these people have in their own little world there. Take them out of their element and they have nothing. It is so true that PEOPLE FEAR WHAT THEY DO NOT KNOW :2cent:
$600k? Woot!I personally think it is BS and I would fight tooth and nail.
I wish them luck with this drama they are in right now. We all could pray for them atleast there will be a chance.

Re: Latest news article on the sutherlands
Seems that they sold it as more of a hobby than a business in an effort to ease the permit process. Regardless, it sucks...

Either way, that really sucks for them. The council is making the issue out to be about zoning regulations and no more, meanwhile the interpretation of the commercial limits on the land usage is going to be affected by public opinion based on fear of snakes.
Those council members would probably have a hard time getting re-elected if they approved a permit for a snake breeding facility within a mile of an elementary school. That sounds rediculous and perfectly acceptable to us, but to a layperson who can't tell a ball python from a king cobra, that's certainly got to be a frightening proposition.
I wish them the best of luck with this...
I agree, I would think that if you are going to plop that kind of money into a place, you would at least make sure that all the proper permits are available. This is very wierd since these people were obviously in business before and know how things work. I liked the comment about the pythons being near a school.... OH MY :O

Re: Latest news article on the sutherlands
It is mroe political BS, probably. My boyfriend started up a tattoo shop several years ago, within sight-vision of a public high school. I was there personally when the city inspector came and said everything was fine, etc. Then a month after we have the place open, they declare he has to shut it down due to the school; mind you, we always made sure kids walking in had ID and were over 18, parent or no parent. It was a completely sterile environment that he had invested about 10000.00 in; new flooring, new bathroom, supplies and all that fun stuff. Gotta LOVE politics.
