I think they need to admit they are a little more than hobby breeders.

Hmm.. I didn't get that from the article. It stated that the Sutherlands indicated that they were hobby breeders instead of a business. It sounded like the residents were more concerned of a large business going in instead of having a problem with the snakes themselves. Maybe the Sutherlands tried to keep it low key because they were afraid of the community backlash of a snake business, but their strategy might be biting them in the rear now.

They need to handle it as a business and operate it under a business rather than claim a hobby. If they did claim a hobby, how did the people in town know about the size of their collection/business? They should have inquired about this and any permits needed before investing $0.01.

That is entirely possible. I didn't read it that way and if they did get their permits under false pretense than it would stand to reason that the community might be upset with good reason. It just proves that I am not a very thorough reader :)

Agreed, stating they are "hobby breeders" is going to bite them in the butt. But there is no doubt in my mind that the community is up in arms about them moving in with snakes, it is just being masked under "other" concerns.

Exactly...The community got wind of things and found a small clause in the law that allowed them to protest it.

Thats exactly why Amy and I are "shopping" for an acreage outside of any city limits. That way the only laws that would affect us would have to be at county or state level. ;)

Didn't one of the rodent suppliers go through this same problem a little while ago? It is pretty sad, but it's probably just something you have to consider if you plan on expanding/building/moving. I know there are a lot of people out there that just look for a reason to complain and protest no matter what, and a subject like snakes or rodents is just icing on the cake for them. :zerb:

And being herpers, they should have followed the letter of the law and not claimed to be hobby breeders since we all know how common folk are afraid of snakes and such and will twist whatever they can to oppose honest business-like snake breeders.

Regardless, that totally sucks. I hope they are able to work it out. Not a great way to start out in a new place. =P
