    Re: Mourning
They are the only rodent I would allow my kids to keep as a pet. We've tried the others (gerbils, hamsters, etc.) and all were very nippy or too small for a kid to handle easily. A male rat is a great pet (two is even better as rats hate to live alone). Long before we had snakes and kept a breeder/feeder rat colony Luke and Beth had a pair of male pet rats...Uncle Kracker and Kid Rock aka Kracker and Rocky. Excellent pets for them. Easy to care for, clean as a cat, very interactive, big enough to be sturdy but not big enough to be too much for a child, and no real rodent smell to speak of. If the kids got busy with school, as long as Kracker and Rocky were fed and watered, they were quite content to hang out together in their large cage until the kids had time to play with them. Far as I'm concerned a pretty much perfect pet for a busy family with a child that wants it's own pet(s).

Many thx to all. Your thoughts and comments are appreciated. :P I'm still bawling like a baby thinking of him, but your hugs and heartfelt sympathies are helping. *sigh*

Sadly, all we'll have is memories. I didn't think to take pics of him. I MIGHT have some fuzzy ones off the 35mm and since I don't own a digital yet, I can't post any, but memories are good things....and we still have two of his daughters. They're both PEW, one is actually Siamese like Smudge was, but they're pets too and will always have a home. :)

I know time will help the healing, but thanks again for the warm thoughts!

Aww sweety, I am so sorry about your loss. It seems as though you did everything humanly possible to save the little guy, and I applaude you for that. Rats are amazing pets, and I totally understand why you mourn him so. I hope you feel better soon <3

HTF did I miss this???? UGH!!!!!!

I am deeply, terribly sorry for the loss of your Smudgie. Rats are precious beings...endearing, winsome little creatures that teach us all to be aware of uncommon beauty & kindness. And it sounds like Smudge was no exception!

Take heart in the confidence that you gave Smudge the best possible life he could have had here on Earth. I'd be hard-pressed to think of anyone who could have loved him more than you obviously did.

    Hurting with you...
