Re: Fishtank Foto Fest! (DU warning)
thanks! 55g is actually my favorite size; not too huge that it can't be moved (empty!) by me alone, but not tiny either.
I love the 125 though; got a sweet deal on it used. Mark built the stand.
Re: Fishtank Foto Fest! (DU warning)
i think i like the look of our 135g the best with the sand as substrate with the frontosas in it... but size wise... my 77g is my favorite. ;)
the 210g is most people's favorite - they love the way it's as long as the couch and how you can view it as you come up the stairs into the living room...
i think a tank which can hold a decent amount of fish, which IMO is no smaller than a 55 is best :) funny how the bigger the tank, the smaller the fish look!
ps i love your avatar!
Re: Fishtank Foto Fest! (DU warning)
recycling goddess, how big do those sharks get? that's soo cool. i cant believe you actualy hatched out shark eggs! i think shraks are pretty cool myself.
Re: Fishtank Foto Fest! (DU warning)
heehee that wasn't me marshall... but yes, you sure can. i believe they don't get that large 18" (i could be wrong here though) - buying shark eggs is really common in the salt water hobby.
Re: Fishtank Foto Fest! (DU warning)
darnit, thats the second time this week! i just get so confused! LOL. probably because i know you have some cool saltwater tanks though. dont you? please tell me you do!! lol.
Re: Fishtank Foto Fest! (DU warning)
Marshall, the banded cat shark can and will get 3 feet in length...as well as the other shark. A minimum size tank for one would be 180 gallons...but even that would eventually be too small.
Here's my two tanks.
My 75 gallon saltwater mixed reef system:

And my favorite all time fish!

And here's my 46 gallon planted Discus and dwarf cichlid tank. Just started in the second week of June, so the plants have a lot of growing in to do. I've already had one successful kribensis spawn in my tank.

And here's a good shot of one of my favorites in this tank...Apistogramma hoignei tucupita, specifically the male.

This tank also contains:
x1 Red Turquoise Discus
x1 Blue Angel Discus
x4 Anamalochromis thomasi (moving to 30g that is currently cycling)
x4 Pelvicachromis sp. Blue/Green dorsal (rare!) (Moving to 30 gallon)
x2 Pelvicachromis pulcher
x2 Apistogramma hoignei tucupita
x4 Apistogramma viejita red/gold (moving to 30g currently cycling)
x9 Rummynose Tetras
x5 Corydoras aeneus
x3 Otocinclus
x1 Bristlenose pleco
x6 Cardinia japonica (AES)
And tons of plants!
Don't worry about the bioload, it will be cut down in a few days. I have a vigorous water change regime in which I complete 30% water changes every four days on the tank to keep the discus and dwarf cichlids nice and happy.

Re: Fishtank Foto Fest! (DU warning)
wow, saltwater tanks are soo pretty. yours look AMAZING!
Re: Fishtank Foto Fest! (DU warning)
ya marshall... i do have a 90g salt water tank but unfortunately it's not nearly as beautiful as the ones shown above!!!
salt water tanks go need time. mine is only 6 months old at this point... in another year or so... it'll be amazing! at the petstore i used to work at... there's a 125g salt water tank set up... it's been there over 7 years now... and man... it's a thing of beauty!!!
nice tanks jason! - since you seem to love cichlids... i have a good friend who deals in cichlids... here's his website... (very very very nice guy - i do all my cichlid dealings thru him - high quality and you can trust him completely!)
http://www.riftzoneaquatics.com/ (he's in vancouver bc canada and yes... he ships fish all the time! no problem with that.)
Re: Fishtank Foto Fest! (DU warning)
Thanks for the comments recycling goddess and Marshall. I consider my tank a never ending work in progress even though it is now two years old. For example, I haven't decided exactly what to do with the open left side of the tank...initially I left it for a nice big green saddle carpet anemone for my amphiprion percula pair...but I'd also love to use the open sand for some more tridacna clams (Maxima, Squamosa, Crocea, etc.) Also, I still have a lot of rockwork that has room to be covered by more corals...
Now that I have my new job I get livestock (Fresh & Salt) cherry picked for me for distributor costs so that's a definite plus to help my addiction. :)
Freshwater-wise I'm only going to deal for the time being with the soft acidic water South American dwarf cichlids, and West African dwarf cichlids. Rift lake cichlids would completely tear apart my planted tank, let alone the discus and all of thee other tank inhabitants. I do eventually plan to set up a Lake Tanganyikan cichlid display tank with some smaller shell dwellers, and medium sized fish.
I am in the progress of setting up two 30 breeder tanks, the one will be planted with dwarf cichlids. The other will be a SPS dominated saltwater tank with maybe two-three small fish. Eventually the room that these tanks are going in to will be my fish room where I plan to have as many tanks in the room that will fit.

Re: Fishtank Foto Fest! (DU warning)
i hear ya about the "work in progress" - i'm taking my salt apart tomorrow and resetting the rock... it collapsed today and so i'm going to do a huge overhaul tomorrow...
ah the work is never done!
