    Maybe it's similiar to the burg or ville that's so common here. :confuzd: Although I like shire WAY better. :D

    It's our counties (similar to your states) that often have -shire on the end of them. I think it comes from what we used to say (in the old days) the Shire of Buckingham or Shire of Oxford etc (before my time though ;) ) And people do sometimes refer to them collectively as the Shires - just think - we could have been the United Shires like US is the United States - really going off on a tangent here ....
