The other thing to consider applies to apartment dwellers (such as myself). You may not want to take your slithery friends outside where your possibly pyscho apartment neighbors can see your snake and then report it to the management.
We don't take our girls out because of this!

I'm an apartment dweller, and I definitely didn't care. In fact, when I take them out, some of my neighbors come up and talk to me. They're even willing to hold Ophelia. ^_^

I live in a house too, but I DO care about what my neighbors think.. that is how laws get dreged up to stop ownership of such animals.
In the last place I lived, my neighbors freaked and I actually had animal welfare out there checking, but they went away cause the neighbors made crud up and said they were neglected and dirty cages, etc.. but the person has never ever been in my house or near it..she just hated snakes.. she ended up calling them several more times, but they finally pressed charges on her, however, she got some others invloved that lived around me and when I started getting nasty messages spray painted on the house and harrassed..we moved..... they even spray painted that I was a devil worshipper and crap right on the house...caused me to pay for new paint in the process cause I could not prove who did it exactly....
Here I am actually happy with my neighbors, at first I was a bit cautious about taking snakes/herps outside, but my neighbors are actually all cool with it here... it is b/c of the herps that I know a few of my neighbors....
I would advise taking a bit of caution when taking herps outside, you never know with ppl now a days and you never know if that law suit is coming cause the "witch next door whos mom had a heart attck cause she saw your snake" may fiile a wrongful death suit..granted it may be hard to prove, but do you really want the aggrivation/stress and media involvment when media tends to shed light in a cruddy way on reptiles most of the time?

I can see where problems like that arise. But what gets me is that people can play their damn rap music so loud windows and car panels start shaking, yet you take your innocent snake outside (god forbid it represents the devil somehow) and you're a criminal. I wish my dad still had is Diamondback, so if neighbors started complaining I'd sick him after them (lawsuits wouldn't be pretty).
