This is King. He is one of the last living Buffalo Wolves left in the world. The species is officially extict because of the last 5-6 left alive, all of them are far too old to reproduce. King is 17 1/2 years old and is not expected to live much longer. He is a pure "black phase" wolf, and is now almost entirely snow white due to age.
What are Buffalo Wolves? There's a show at 9 pm eastern time tonight on National Geographic called Thunderbeast about wolves re-introduced into a national park (can't recall which one) and how they are hunting the buffalo again. We've been waiting all week for it to come on!

Other than the brief bit the guide told us on our little tour of the facilities, I don't know anything about Buffalo Wolves. They're a separate species of wolf, like Timber Wolf or Mexican Red Wolf...and there are only 5 or 6 left alive in the world. And all those left are at least 17 years old...far too old to reproduce....so there won't ever be any young to reintroduce into the wild. Not even sure what continent they were originally found on, but given the name, I would guess they were a North American wolf.
