Curious Pastels, HQ Pastel = HQ babies? and visa versa?

Ahhh, but is there such a think as a "clunker" bumblebee? I would imagine even "ugly" pastels will sell just fine for those trying to make bees on a budget. LOL

For my bee project, I used the best looking pastel girls I could get my hands on ... the higher the quality that you put in, the higher quality that you will CONSISTENTLY get out. I personally wouldn't want to raise low grade female pastels for 3 years and not produce the best looking bee that I could. I'd much rather spend the money for a high quality girl and know that I will produce the best bees that I possibly can. ;)

OK, then what is everybody's definition of a "high quality" pastel? I have seen Adam's picture of one that looks like it would glow in the dark :), but what are you looking for? Is it high blushing, the intense color, or a combination?


I am considering a pastel as my next purchase, and like Kavmon said, I would like to get the best quality within reason.

Oh I agree 100%! And wouldn't have expected anything different from you! LOL ...I'm just saying that some people (plenty of them, I imagine) would be willing to take any ol' pastel just for the chance to make some crosses with other morphs like bees.

Personally, I'm with you, I will wait patiently for the best, because I consider it an investment in my future...and I have no intention of investing in "cheap." ;)

I think it can be kind-of tricky when getting a young pastel. A lot of pastels can fade as they get older, but I've seen some 1000+ gram blondes that are still hot. I think blushing is important for supers, but if it is a bright yellow adult with no blushing, I would still consider that high quality.

Then again, I still have no practical knowledge from breeding pastels yet :) So I dont know.

Cheap could also mean a lot of other things...pastels are being produced at a very high this year and there's going to be a lot of moving and flipping of male pastels...buying a cheap pastel from Joe Scammer on kingsnake.com is not going to be a wise purchase.

That's a good point ... Something to consider when you're picking out your pastel is what it's going to look like as an adult. Experienced breeders know the things to look for in hatchling pastels that indicate how they may or may not mature. You'll pay a premium for that experience, but if you're looking for the best possible pastel that fits within your budget, IMO it's well worth it! ;)

Ok, here's a dumb question... Why does everyone say male "some-morph" and female normal? What would be the difference in that and a male normal paired with a female "some-morph"? Is it just because male morphs are less expensive? I'm just a little lost... :confused:

Bingo... Most people trying to get into morphs get a co-dominant morph like a pastel, and for pastels, the males are less expensive (I try not to say cheaper).
