What Judy is saying is that there should be a hide on the warm and cool side (2 of them) so the BP feels secure when thermo gradiating between temps. Hope that helps...

Welcome to the forum and to the world of ball python obsession LOL. You might want to check out this thread about hides to get an idea of what we are talking about.

BP's are a quite shy, nocturnal snake so it's very normal for them to not be seen outside of their hides all that much but especially when they are going into a shed. Daniel's article on shedding will be a huge help to you.

If you just got the snake it may well be a bit dehydrated from being shipped improperly or from poor pet store husbandry so just make sure it has access 24/7 to a clean water supply.

Here's our Ball Python Caresheet if you haven't had a chance to read it yet.

Also you need to be able to monitor your cool and warm side temps as well as your humidity accurately. A lot of us use the Acu-Rite digital from WalMart though Lowe's and Home Depot sell a similar product under a different brand name...all are well under $20.00 including the cost of a AAA battery. The stick on analog ones your local pet store will sell you are notoroiusly unreliable. If your snake is going into shed you need to push the normal environment humidity from 50-60% to around 70% till he's done shedding to help it go well.

The most important thing we learned when we got our first BP was to get their enclosure stablized as far as temps and humidity, put in two good hides they will use, fresh water and then just leave them be for a week or two to settle in. It's hard to not touch a new pet but with snakes it's best to do this. It will help your snake when it comes to feeding and future handling if it's allowed it's quiet time to adjust to all the changes in it's life.

Enjoy the forum! Feel free to ask lots of questions, brag about your new snake and enjoy the community of BPNet. :)
