    i have a piece of 12" flexwatt on each shelf and i took a router and cut it down on the bottom of each shelf about 1/8" for it to fit in to. the tubs are sterilite 1860 34 3/4" x 16 1/2" x 6"

    Is melamine the best material to use to create racks? Or is MDF a suitable substitute.

    I'm not sure what the difference is. I was under the impression that melamine and medium density fiberboard were the same.

    The melamine shelves are MDF with the white melamine coating on the outside. Plain old MDF doesnt have that coating. I would use the melamine as it will be less likely to absorb humidity and moisture. ;) If you wanted to use the MDF, at least give it a good coat of a washable paint.

    I used MDF and I gave mine 2 coats of paint on the shelves, i have no problem with humidity. mine holds at 52%

    Not really, mine only seems to be a degree or two higher, at the most.
