Re: Day/Night Cycle Question
It's a good idea to get them on a light cycle as soon as possible if you will be breeding in the fall.
It's not so much about the light cycle or the temp drop, it's all about CHANGE. A change in light cycle will help them know that it's time to breed, and without a previously established light cycle, it's hard to "show them" the change.
Racks don't make a difference, they still allow light.
It doesn't have to be sunlight, just regular room lamps will work ... it's about light and dark ... again, it's not really about the light cycle, it's about the change .... to a ball python, there's a big difference between 8 hours of darkness a day and 14 hours of darkness a day ... it's something that they notice. ;)

What are ways to show this change? What ways of lighting can you use to show this change?

Re: Day/Night Cycle Question
Room lighting if you don't use lamps on your caging will be the key for that distinction.

You got the link to Adam's breeding calendar... the changes in the light cycle are shown to the BP by the presence of light, and the presence of darkness. So, for example, Adam shows 14 on and 10 off for most of the year... then slowly bringing it down to 12 on 12 off, 10 on 14 off, etc..
Re: Day/Night Cycle Question
And if you dont feel like futsding with the plugs then get a digital timer from Matt like I said before. Sorry if i sounded rude but i didnt mean to be.
Re: Day/Night Cycle Question
Thanks alot for your help guys I'm going to be switching to tubs soon so I'll be getting rid of all my bulbs. I will be trying to breed this year so to provide the BP's with a day/night cycle can I use a regular table lamp on a timer facing the tubs where my snakes will be in? And does it matter what kind of bulb I use for the table lamp, any suggestions?

It doesn't have to face the tubs. A lit room is enough .... light, dark, light, dark ... bp's can tell the difference. ;)

The snakes don't have a preference. ;)

Re: Day/Night Cycle Question
Awesome. I tried to put them together last month and nothing happened, now I know why. Someone told me to just cool them all day and all night for the whole month but I wasn't sure that was safe so I only cooled at night. Maybe I didn't cool enough or they just didn't notice the change enough.
