Re: my tanks - dialup warning
hahaha bettas are not all that hardy either. LOL oh jeanne, you are not a bad fish mom... you just aren't choosing the right fish...
*holding your hand*
i promise you have the potential to be a GREAT fish mom! just like you are a GREAT snake mom!!! fish may be more work, but they are waaaaaaay more forgiving than a snake regarding temps etc.
Re: my tanks - dialup warning
Heck I would be happy to jst be able to keep even a pretty beta alive..I had this pretty purplish one, it was a lavender color, ohhhh, it was pretty... but I was such a bad Mom to it, it died. I felt so bad I actually cried after all my fish died that I have tried to keep. So I decided that it was not worth some pretty little fish losing his life cause I am totally incompetent in keeping them.

Thanks Aleesha! It means alot to me, but I still feel like a bad fish Mom.
Re: my tanks - dialup warning
no, i think you probably got bad fish advice from the pet shop *shocked face* oh how could that happen eh?
bettas actually prefer heated tanks... 80 degrees... with a filter and floating plants... i bet no one ever told you that? they live in small pockets of water in the wild and the floating plants in your tank make them feel safe!
in order to keep females, you need a larger tank (77 gallons works great) and a huge mass of floating plants... and the tank mates need to be juuuuust right as well :)
so see, you aren't a bad fish mom... just an ill-informed one!
Re: my tanks - dialup warning
That is one awesome set up you have! I'm jealous!
Re: my tanks - dialup warning
I love your tanks! I am wondering if yours are like mine; once you got them set up all right, with the good filters, good biotics (bacteria in filters, gravel etc) they really are Not a lot of work. I do 1/4 water changes every few months and I haven't had a dead fish in about a year.
Your tanks are very impressive; there are pet stores around here that you put to shame!
Re: my tanks - dialup warning
I concur on the betas. I gave up on them when it seems like I was just killing them.
I love your saltwater tanks! Your 90 gal looks kinda crowded, but that's probably just the angle of the picture. I'd love to set up a saltwater tank, but I don't think I have the time for one with everything else anymore. (Also, this apartment is not built correctly for the weight of a 55 gal tank with all the rock...nevermind the tank is packed in the basement with most of the stuff I'd need.)

the bigger the tank the easier. it takes a lot more grime and build up to dirty 10 gallons of water than it does to dirty one gallon.
that is obviously only as far as dirt is concerned^^

You know, I completely agree with you there. A lot of people (like myself included) started off with a 10g tank; these are pretty tough actually, since it seems like dirt does build up quicker.
I am all for over-filtrating. All of our tanks have more than the amount needed of filters, bigger too; it really makes things easier when cleaning time comes. And anyone who has a tank should be required to get a Python siphon; they fit right onto a sink faucet, and you just fill the tank like that; no buckets. And they work backward to siphon the dirty water; I just take the end of mine outside, give it a suck (no, it doesn't taste good) and the water goes out into the creek.
I have a betta; they do seem pretty tough to keep. It could be the way they're delivered; most stores get each one shipped in a tiny sealed baggie that's about three inches square; I know they are air-breathers, but this has to be stressful beyond recovery for most of them. The one I have now builds a bubble nest constantly in his bowl.
Geez, I could ramble on about fish tanks all day!

so many people think... i'll start with guppies, or goldfish... something easy. these are NOT easy fish. they are soooooo inbred that they die off really easy. we called the livebearer section in the store the "tanks of death" when i worked at my local fish store (lfs) and goldfish are the number one poopers of the fish world and need a minimum of 10 gallons per fish!!! so when someone puts a few of them in a ten gallon tank... and wonder why they die... well,... DUH!
if you want to get a little tank going and not have them dieing... get a group of danios. they are soooooooooooooooooo hardy! of course that means i get to pplay with your ferrets!
or you could invite me over and i can set up a tank for you! heehee
Fish are soo high maintenance!!! Our 75 gallon always gets yucky. I think its time for a new filter!!!!:irkd:
