Is night time temperature drop necessary?

Maybe so. But without wifi I wouldn't even know there's a problem so it would just sit there. With knowing there's a problem I could rush home as soon as possible or alert soneone else to look after it.

In over 10 years I've never once had an issue with my Herpstats where I would have needed to rush home.

You get what you pay for.

They do have a Herpstat with wifi but you can only monitor the numbers, not change them. May give you what you're wanting though.

Like I said before I monitor the room temps more... Not the hotspots.

I just check thermostats in the morning and at night and have them double-thermostatted just in case and that has saved my tail once already.

I put the one closest to the outlet just a couple degrees higher as a failsafe for overheating, the one plugged in between that and the actual heat source set normally. If I didn't keep my house heat high enough that they would be 100% fine if they shut off for a day or two, I might have some kind of backup figured out for too cold, but it just doesn't get cool enough here. A room space heater set to a bit below cool-side temps as a backup might be good for people in cooler climates.

The first piece of advice I got when I first started keeping reptiles was to have an emergency fund set aside for vet bills and equipment. Stuff breaks, and if you're relying only on the stuff you have on hand you're gonna run into issues like this. Especially if you don't have the means to replace stuff when it breaks. I don't understand how the wifi function is for anyone other than you to monitor equipment that you don't trust to just leave alone for a day while you're gone.

Like KMG said, you get what you pay for, which is why I use Herpstats. If you trust your equipment you eliminate the need to monitor it ALL the time. It doesn't have to be the brands we're suggesting to you, but if you spend the money now, you'll save the headache later.
