I would say that a heat-pad isn't practical for Cresteds. They're arboreal, and rarely come down from their perches. If you insist on using a heat-pad, I would mount it along the side of the enclosure, as opposed to the bottom, and even then a lamp would likely be a better choice. So long as the room that the enclosure is in has a relatively warm ambient temperature (60-70 degrees farenheit), a nice, low-watt lamp should suffice. Read a few caresheets, and call some breeders who have alot of experience.

While I keep my Crestie in the mid-70's, this particular topic seems to be up for debate. I've spoken with Garrick at CrestedGecko.com, and he says he keeps his Geckos from the high-70's to mid-80's, and has never had an issue. If I remember correctly, he does lower temps a bit for breeding-season, but he said mid-80's year-round is a non-issue.

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
my room will go from the high 70's to low 80's during the year. they eat, grow and breed well for me. no extra heat just ambient room temps.
jeanne, save yourself some stress/headache, go get the crestie! lol

Hehe. This new addiction for herps is keeping me in a constant but enjoyable broke-status. My wallet has never been so pleasantly thin :D Always something to buy for their enclosures. Now I'm just trying to save for the supplies to build a nice rack system... then come more critters!

OMG, tell me about it! I know what thats like.
Hehehhe, on a side note, my daughter has gone to her friends house for the night, so I dont have to hear her telling me to go buy that crestie till tomarrow when she returns.. hmm, maybe she will forget.

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
Well, I have resisted the urge. But I am still thinking of them, and I have a 20G long tank, that I was thinking I could set on edge for them, so it would be tall. It even has a sliding lid(it was a snake type tank)so I could easily access it. A lamp could be put on top? But then it has to shine thru glass. But I thought that the tallness would be very happy places for the geckos?
Although the ones at the Petco were large, I think I would rather buy direct from a breeder like everyone reccomends.
The feeding looked a bit complex, but I think reading the caresheet(the 4th or 5th time!) it said you could feed only the Crested diet? Does that mean no crickets neccesary? I am reading everything I can find at this point adn reading thru posts here too.

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
I do not use crix at all. They are nasty vile things IMO like mice. I use CGD, Clarks and Herptivite and Reptical to be sure they are getting what they need.

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
crickets "vile" their just little bugs! lol between the bearded, chameleon, cresteds, toad crickets don't last too long here.
