oh one thing I couldn't find was lab blocks and total cereal.. so I got a cereal called Vector (as it has loads of vitamins as well) and I'm going to have to investigate lab blocks further... cause the only ones I found were Hagen and the fourth ingredient was corn :( and 16% protein.

edit to add: i just checked and the one you suggested has corn as the third and fourth ingredients so perhaps Hagen will be alright???

Can't say I've ever heard of Hagen, but if it is similar to the Mazuri, then it should be ok.

Also, I don't think that a 40 gallon aquarium for male rats would be a good thing. Males pee... and pee ALOT. The ammonia would build up quite rapidly and they would be having a hard time breathing a long time before your friend ever noticed there was any smell. If anything, maybe get her a nice wire cage, or even better, build her one using PVC-coated hardware cloth. If you have a Home Depot or a Lowe's(or any hardware store), you can get the 1/2"x1/2" hardware cloth pretty cheap. A friend of mine's husband built one for her out of this stuff and a rubbermaid/sterilite underbed box for the pan.

Here's a link that shows what it looks like when it's done: http://www.the-real-rat-community.co...;threadid=4284

It's a gigantic cage and didn't take long to build. Hope that helps!

finally got in... but there were no instructions on how to make it... just a pic of it.

regardless i'll let her know about it. ;) i have the tank and it's not being used here... which is why i'm gifting it away... she has her rat in a tank which is half the size... so i was gifting her one that's much larger. i will mention to her about the fumes :eyepoppin

and as for the type of lab blocks you are talking about... we don't have those here so i have no idea is hagen is as good or not.

If I remember correctly from back home Hagen is a major pet food supplier and a pretty reputable one that's been around awhile. I would think their lab block would be fine to use, especially with the other things added in for variety.

Here's the first photos of our new little ratties! My 6 year old daughter is holding them... still... for the photo LOL and that was not a simple thing to do.

Rosie loooooves to have a nice gentle scratch and she closed her eyes as I gave her a nice long one this morning. Becky is happy to lay on my daughter's tummy and chill with her watching tv.

:worship: of the rats! we are now their slaves

i cannot believe the difference in becky's and rosie's fur... switching to these 'home-made' foods is really making a difference! becky is like silk now, instead of having fur like straw... and rosie is still a little coarse - but she is a rex so i think it'll always be more coarse but she is softer than when we got her on the weekend.

thanks again for assisting me to feed these wonderful critters - they are thankful to you as well!
