How do you balance the minimalist setup with their wanting the security of burrowing in substrate?

Minimalist setup can be done in any type of enclosure tub, glass tank, cage (that is obviously suited for your animal based on size), it's about allowing you to monitor the animal easily so by minimalist it's about unprinted newspaper or paper towel and necessary hides. The rest which are decorations and or bioactive setup, natural substrate should be added later on.
