We wouldn't want to make this a regular thing since I assume its a little stressful for the snake, but to that point, what would be the least stressful way to transport a python on outings like this? Are they most confortable in a small container or in a cloth sack or what? What about temperature control?
I know some people who carry theirs around in a purse. This doesn't seem too bad since they are often soft inside but padded and with a tougher outer cover so provides some protection from bumping and jabbing accidently and also some temperature control.
We are not supper experienced owners. We've had one for a year and a half now and he seems to be doing very well, but so far we've not been taking him on such "outings".
I'm thinking it might be a nice way to further enjoy our pet and also entertain curious friends and aquantences.
What are people's thoughts on this topic?
It's truly NOT safe to carry a snake in your purse...I can remember reading about someone who allowed a snake into their purse & it got STUCK in a key-chain. Snakes
are unique pets that can get stuck, injured & even killed by things you cannot easily predict, so just as homes are made "kid-safe" or "dog-safe", you have to consider this.
But I want to address your question, as there are legitimate times you need to travel with a snake, like moving or taking one to the vet, so the best method is this:
1. Put snake (individually, if you have more than one) into a cloth snake-bag (or pillowcase), secure it first with a strong twist-tie, then fold that end over itself & secure
it with a strong rubber band. I've never had a snake that could open a bag this way, & it's easier than "tying" (or un-tying!) a cloth bag, but do carry extra twist-ties &
rubber bands: twist-ties can wear out, & rubber bands can break.
2. Then put that bagged snake into a styro-foam shipping box or an insulated "cooler"/lunch box (depending on size of snake). Consider air-flow if a long trip- a small hole made in styro-foam or a tiny wad of tape to keep the lid from closing tightly, if you won't be able to open the lid periodically. In cold weather, chemical heat packs can be used, or literally a bottle of hot water, can be included, & also a towel for padding & comfort. Snakes can perish from excessive heat too, so they truly NEED protection of an insulated carrier...even on a short car trip my snakes are ALWAYS transported this way. (good question!)
*As far as taking your snake to a friend's house for a private showing, it's best they come to yours. Remember that not all snakes handle stress very well, travel is scary for them. If you're not at home with your snake, what will you do if they act up & bite out of fear?
