It can turn red at certain times due to dinoflagellate (algae) blooms. There are marine and freshwater species which under the right conditions “bloom” and release toxin. This turns the water blood red and toxic, which is likely what old stories were referring to when they said water turned to blood. Pretty cool imo :)

I have taken to the water in some very nice destinations over the last 20 or so years and appreciate a post like this. Beautiful pictures.

Coastal Florida has this problem now & then too...really hurts business at the beach. Must have been really scary back when no one knew what was causing it.
