I have two boys (9 & 16) who are interested in snakes so this time around I want to try BP's. Have been soaking up everything I can (BHB, Olympus vids and others) and reading articles, where I stumbled into this forum. So glad I found it as I have been in several car related forums and know the benefits to be had. I know I'm probably several months away from ownership as I want to be as ready as possible before bringing some critters home. Want to attend a couple of shows first with my sons so they can get the feel for the hobby. Will probably do some breeding down the line but not for awhile. Anywho, I look forward to conversing with you all and hope I don't ask too many dumb questions. And yes, I know the "search" field is my friend.:D Cheers

    Welcome !!

Best thing you can do AFTER researching ( and you're doing that ) is to make sure you buy a good feeder / eater and ideally one that eats thawed frozen rats /mice ..

I only buy from breeders off the forum as I trust them more than reptile stores who usually end up buying the ones the breeders can't sell then sell them into the unsuspecting public at a relatively high price ...

    Welcome to the forum, Tim.

Happy to see you're doing things the right way and researching and preparing before bringing your snake home. That's a great lesson to teach your sons as well.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, that's what we're here for.

Good luck and keep us posted!

So why doesn't everyone take this path as it seems to be the easiest and least smelly option? I raised mice and rats for my snakes long ago and I still remember the smell. Never again!

I think you mis-read that..."a good feeder" meant the snake was already taking f/t prey...but we all agree that raising rodents is a smelly endeavor! ;)

So why aren't all BP's started out on f/t prey?

Most big breeders feed live. So is hobbiest switch as soon as possible. If u but from bhb he feeds frozen/thawed
