Have you tried pre-killing and placing in when twitching still? I have no feeding issues with pre-killed when offered this way. Both my BPs will not eat FT but will eat pre-killed. Is a bit more traumatic for me to feed this way but it works and my BPs are safe.
I agree, sometimes you just have to compromise with "fresh-killed". Oh the things we do for our snakes...

Plus reheat with a blast from a hairdryer then offer instantly before it cools ..

Re: Strike and drop
Once I got a really gnarly-looking frozen rat in amongst the others in the package. It was kind of freezer burnt and twisted up and smelled a bit more strongly than the usual. My ball struck and coiled but would not eat it. I thawed a different one and offered it, and my snake ate that one no problem.
Another time my ball struck but didn't eat was when I tried to feed him a rat that was pushing it size-wise. He struck and coiled but then looked at me like, "You expect me to what with this gargantuan?!"
Also if the rat cools down too much from me dancing it around the enclosure my ball won't eat it.
Those are just my personal observations of times when my ball has struck but not eaten.
