i just use a flashlight or turn the room lights on. he'll be fine with a quick check.

We've gone back and forth between red and blue with my son's snake he's had since June trying to find the right combo to keep temps in the right spot then switching back when the bulb we settled on burned out prematurely. Even with all the changes his snake is well assisted, eating well and still very mild mannered.

I use red heat bulbs for several of my snakes and they all seem to eat, shed, and poop just fine.

Will the CHE be fine on a dimmer or does it need its own thermostat?

a thermostat will always be the better option, but personally i use my CHE on a rheostat (dimmer). rheostats work best in rooms with stable temperatures as they do not adjust to changing temperatures. if the room your enclosure is in has stable temperatures it'll work just fine.

would the normal temp drops at night still be considered a stable temp room, I have my dimmer plugged into a timer right now
so it is only on at night time anyway.

I would just flash a dim light in there or find some sort of light without direct shining (ex. A flash light under a glass of water or just shining the flash light in.) a quick glance at night shouldn’t be too much harm as long as its not for too long, just a quick scan.

how much drop are we talking? my room fluctuates by ~5-7° over a 24hr period and the CHE + rheostat works very well for me, but i took the time "to get to know" the dial before i started relying on it and i have to adjust it in the morning and evening.
