I'm in the uk so it's pretty safe really - I usually trim any bits off , give it a good rub down with a cloth and hose them down outside - a quick spray with extreme solution of F10 and they're fine .

Some more info on that including bleaching techniques and baking.

That should have read ' extremely diluted solution of F10 .
