I've read and heard to never use pine shavings because the oil in it could be harmful to snakes but I hadn't heard about any ill effects of aspen. I do agree that it's kinda dusty though. I usually spray my bedding with water when I clean cages to keep that dust down a bit. Aspen sanichips is less dusty but the snakes spill it all over the place. I've been thinking about trying coco husk/eco earth too. I really like the looks of it.

I'm still learning so I dont have a ton of personal experience that's just what I've heard. I actually have a bag if aspen that came with my tank and never used bc of what I heard about it, so maybe I'll give It chance. I like Eco earth but it can be a pretty big pain because its essentially just soil 😅 so it might not be best if you have a large amount of snakes. But it definitely gives the tank a really cool, tropical look if you're willing to keep up with the maintence (its a also good if you have a hard time with keeping high humidity like I do because its kind of moist)

I think you may be confusing aspen for pine and/or cedar.

I don't use aspen, but have and the past and no many people who have for years with no complications.

I hate Aspen as it looks so fake ( like sawdust ) and gets all over the house and carpets ... It also drains colour ( not literally ) out of light coloured or albino snakes .

If you want a pale substrate which is so much better to look at and doesn't get everywhere try Beech Chips .

I use Herptopia. Holds the humidity better than Ecoearth in my opinion. And since Boople likes to burrow it is not as wet either as the eco earth.
