Going from 4 or 10 to 40 is an enormous jump. I'm starting again for the second time from scratch.
1st time out was just getting lots of nice snakes and had a general idea of what my goal was.
This time out I am very specific on what I buy. I run it through WOBP to see where my possibilities lie and my goal is for the cleanest example of whatever I'm working with.
I would go slow, keep adjusting your goals and ensure the snakes are taken care of as best possible. The fact that you mention money in your posts should be an indicator that you are making this a job. If that's the case instead of 40 cheap snakes buy 5 of the rarest ones and go from there....

    Re: Collection Growth Over Time!
JordonornoDan thats very good advice! I definitely didn't even think about holdbacks and all the animals that I would have from producing! I think I'll start narrowing what projects I want to work with down and focus on what I really love then! Im working mainly with sandblasts, clowns, urban camos, paints, and bels. Im also very excited to start getting on with my cherry bomb project but thats going to be a long one. I had so many more that I wanted to work with but I think your right!

Select the genetics you want to work with. I recently did this.

Come up with a budget for each snake you would be willing to spend.

Find as many genes you want to work with with the minimum number of snakes to reach that goal. Attempt to get as many of those genes into single snakes through breeding. Profit.

if the hobby/collection doesn't create a hardship on u or your animals, lol let it grow. also a breeding plan would be helpful to manage your collection and keep u from going too crazy.

that said, i went kinda crazy. in 2 years, i have 30-something snakes - mostly BP's. i have more restraint when it comes to eye candy these days but we will see how i hold up after this weekend's reptile expo lol. anyway if i could do it all over, i would have a better plan for my projects. i'm not a breeder, but do plan to hobby breed for pretty snakes to keep, but from that perspective i would say i have too many duplicate genes and males. but i'm happy and attached to my babies. :)
