Definitely both. I'm attached to the animals individually as pets, but managing the collection is a hobby.

Both. So are my rats, so are my lizards. Heck even the feeder fish for my mangrove are pets and hobbies. Just not my roaches or crickets

Definitely both. I have definite "go to" snakes that are mostly companion animals...pets. I also bought some with projects in mind...hobby. However, as I care for them, handle them...their personalities come out and some of them become pets.
Pets are forever. Hobbies (or businesses for that matter) change up based on purpose or goals.

A lot of people keep their breeding rats as pets, and raise their babies as feeders. Or you can say keep them as pets, until they're fed. I know there was someone on the forum who breeds specific rare types/coloration of rats as pets, and keeps some as feeders, and makes quite a bit of money back from selling them to pet owners.

in my mind if you're raising something to feed it to something else, you can't really love it :P

Actually you spend time with them and bond but also understand the reasoning for the relationship.
