Had a chuckle remembering me and 2 other lil girl friends when we were really young (ages 5 - 9). We ran Lindsay, Ontario, Canada's only toad hospital for a few summers. Really quite a complicated set-up really (read large furniture box) with wards for various imagined illnesses and a sadly unused maternity ward. Our neighbourhood had those basement window wells and the poor toads fell in there an awful lot (and weren't fast enough to avoid our assistance I suspect now). Combined with a few cat attacked toads and we were in business!

We also ran weekly caterpillar races (my dad once accidentally stepped on my prize winner Speedy and I swear I was mad for a week!) Speedy was great on the back stretch LOL.

I still love the wierdest critters apparently which buys me some much needed "coolness" points with my kids.

Ah yes, the gold mine of the window well.

The elementary school that is down the road from me has some quite large window wells, and when I was younger I'd ride my bike down there and make the rounds, checking all of the window wells. Toads were a common find, as were mice and moles (which I left alone). One time, I was down there and the groundskeeper yelled at me 'get out of there, young man!' lol.. I don't think he expected to find a 7 year old girl down in the window well searching out slimy things.

    :)
