    I feed mine over her water bowl - vast majority of time she eats it in the bowl rest of the time she carries it to her bark tunnel.

    A little aspen ingested isn't a problem, the digest bones.

    This has always been my first thought when this topic comes up. They ingest bones, beaks, claws. All kinds of hard stuff. Prob worse in the wild.

    When my snake grabs a rodent and coils and lands in the water bowl I'll pick up his head, rodent and all, and move it over to the side. Not sure if it's good to have the snakes head in the water, seems like they could drown? Also, when they grab a fresh killed rodent and coil they go into a 'trance' at which point I like to quickly spot clean the cage if it needs it, kind of a handy little trick to kill two birds with one stone!

    Like Zincubus said, if you're worried, you could try feeding on cardboard or even cut down a plastic placemat to place over the substrate while feeding.
