Since Burms are on the Lacy act I doubt anyone is breeding them anymore, most breeders ditched that project because they have so many eggs and you can't get rid of them very easily, it would be hard to move 50+ Burms in one state only. I'd throw out some ads on Craig's list to see if you can find one to rehome. As far as breeders vs. private individuals for retics I would think you would be fine as long as you know the genetics, percentages and localities of SD/D retic. I actually just bought one on Craig's List and he gave me the original paperwork he got from the breeder, I contacted the breeder directly and got all the info I needed. And I paid about 1/3 of the price since he was desperate to get rid of the snake and moving out of state. If you can't get the genetics in full detail forget out it unless you want to risk a monster snake LOL.

The best babies are kept and/or sold, the rest become food for snake-eating snakes like king cobras or eastern indigoes. Also in larger states like CA you're more likely to find someone breeding them; in my state I don't think anyone is.

I'll look around at the places suggested. I agree that burms will be hard to find, and I probably will end up looking for a dwarf or super dwarf retic instead because of that. Either of those snakes would be something I'd like to have, and yes I know what I'll be getting into with one. That's whay I plan to get a dwarf or super dwarf and a male, so that I can better manage the size on my own. Thanks for all the suggestions and tips ^_^

Also this is all mostly research at this point, I don't imagine in the very near future that I'll actually be buying a very large snake. I'm just gathering some information so that if the time comes that I decided I am able to handle one, I'll know where to start looking.

Just remember you won't be able to take a retic across state lines either. However they can be shipped to you if the selller was grandfathered in through usark

Remember a dwarf retic still can easily hit 14'. Dwarf isn't that much smaller than mainlands. If you want something under 10', then you are going to want a super dwarf. Caesar is 37.5 SD, 31.5 dwarf and 31% mainland from Vital and he is a little over 4' now at 8 months old. Might be bigger as he is in shed and being antisocial in his hide. And that is feeding him every 4-7 days. The best thing is find out how big the parents were. That is why I say go through a reputable breeder. Sure you might spend a little more but you will be getting exactly what you want.

Also, if you do move, you can always find someone you trust that is USARK member before the deadline and have them ship the snake to you once you get to your new place.

I too was on the fence about a retic for a long time as I didn't want a 18' monster that ate goats lol. I finally took the plunge with Caesar my super dwarf and I gotta say, I am very happy. He is the total lounge snake. I heard retics are flighty, never sit still etc but Caesar is opposite lol. Once he realizes that dinner isn't coming when the door is slid open, he goes into slug mode lol. I just reach in, scoop him up and sit down with him. He will for the most part look around a little, maybe stretch on the bed or me and then if bored, he curls up between my arm and stomach in a coil with his head on top and just kicks it there lol.
If you have had boas or other largish snakes, you should be fine with a super dwarf retic as long as you get one from a reputable breeder. I think a lot of Daniel Solis' stuff gets to around 10' and when I talked to Kris at Vital Exotics, seems his stuff is about 5-10'. And when I talked to Shannon Roepke about a Platinum Tiger I was interested in, she too said it should top out around 10'. Get a male, they will stay smaller and thinner. That's why I went with a male. But again, make you find out about the snake. Kris told me my guy eats anything anytime and was very handleable. And it ended up, he is one of the top 3 loungers I got haha. Anyways good luck and I'm sure if you get one, you will love them. They are loaded with personality and seem to actually know and watch you lol.
