    As mentioned above, it is totally up to you, but being a volunteer at a shelter, I know how huge a difference it makes when an animal is adopted. Each one opens up a space for a new one to be adopted. And many are actually quite small, some even in rare colors. Some may have cosmetic issues that make them less likely to be adopted but not have any true health problems.

    Find a snake you like, whether it comes from a breeder or rescue. : )

    Since you are looking strictly for a pet and the rescue near you is reputable then I see no reason not to adopt one of their adult snakes. I would just ensure that the critter is laid back since your children will be handling it.

    I would also make sure it's eating f/t and not live feeders so you don't end up with pet rats down the road either.
