Also, if you were to use any sort of shredded or granular substrate it would really get everywhere whenever you opened the front. I was going to epoxy some sort of threshold to the front of the floor, a dowel or something, so that i could switch to shredded wood, but i'm pretty happy with paper towels for now.
I actually do have a temp gun, great little item! I forget the model but i opted for the mid-range priced one on amazon that had the most positive reviews, i think it was like $25 or $30 - the Accurite, however, is my little gem for its hydrometer feature. I had major issues with humidity when using the crappy little dials - long story short: it was reading about 30% low, so even thought i had humidity of 60-65%, i though it was arid, and after spraying 10X a day to get a (false) reading of 65% i had condensation pooling all over, it was infuriating! $12 later (and free Prime shipping, thank you very much) i dont even keep a spray bottle anymore, another great attribute of the tub, although the weather stripping along the edge of the lid is key in humidity maintenance.

The Accutites are nice when they are working. After I replaced all of mine a couple of times I went a different route. Some were killed by snakes like my BRB that took one swimming but most just died from what I believe was the environment they were living in.

I actually found that this cheap little analog combo works pretty well.

I keep cigars and have two humidors with nice hygrometers for each. I put both of the lil combo gauges linked above I have in my humidors and they quickly agreed with the humidor gauges. I was very surprised.

I do have another system that I use. Its a four part system. It has three pods that are meant for outside use to report the temp and humidity to the home base that gives the room temp. I have the three pods in three different cages and the main station in the snake room. This way I get the humidity and temp of three cages reported back to a single source that gives me the room temp.

I got it on Amazon but they no longer have the three pod model and only have a two pod system.

Kinda like this but the main station is not as fancy and the pods that came with mine have a digital screen that gives you temp and humidity on them as well so I can see it on them in the cages.

Since others are chiming in about the tubs, I see you're from Florida. The best place for you to get your rack is at one of the Repticons that C Serpents is attending, to save on shipping. Give him a call and just ask him which is the next show that he will be vending at.
