Actually, in our little town, the only to get in contact with animal control is to call the cops. They also seem to be the local LostAndFound center for valuable stuff around here. We had a HUGE wind storm a few weeks ago (it took the roof off the house across the street from us), and someone's ducks got loose. There were about eight in a tight group, but wandering around in the street aimlessly. I didn't know who they belonged to, and I couldn't get them into my yard, where they could have been penned up safely and comfortably, so I walked over to the police station and told the cops where they had bedded down, now that it was getting dark.

Maybe they thought I was crazy, but what else do you do?

Ah that makes sense for small towns- My city has an animal services number and an animal care center, so I'd just call either one or both!

Also, I automatically think of of emergency 911 when I think of calling the cops LOL, but maybe that's not it!

People do call the cops for EVERYTHING (here's one for you, a guy called to complain because the clerk at the home improvement store was named Isis and she had the nerve to have it on her name tag, he was very offended)

Our animal control around here is a joke. Basically the only thing they will respond to is dogs and loose farm animals. Not cats, not exotics. They consider those to fall under wildlife and Dept Natural Resources should handle it, but they won't either.

Luckily for him, they did call, because the temperatures we got to at night after he was picked up would have killed him.

Usually those calls will come in on a non emergency number, usually. Then we just notify the appropriate agencies, although, if it's a hazard to people, like running in traffic, we'll send a cop. He was found in a fairly small town with it's own police force and it was a slow night, so they went.
