Is he on aspen or paper? If he's in aspen and he can burrow to the heat, the aspen will act like a blanket and keep him warm. If he's on paper give him a tight-fitting hide over the heat tape, that will help keep the heat under it even if the rest of the tub is cool.

Aspen but it's not a thick layer. My biggest concern is that the ambient temp is throwing him off because he hasn't eaten since coming home with me. He went to strike at one mouse, started to wrap but the mouse wiggled free a split second later and it spooked him. He's shown no interest since despite trying smaller prey including a rat pup that was small enough for him.

Re: Ambient temps in a tub enclosure
I have my guy in a bathroom walk in closet. I had to get a small 15 dollar space heater from wal-mart because my ambient temps were going as low as 72. I have it on top of his tub, it has a thermostat and tip over kill switch. Is it possible to get one and put it near the tub so it hits that directly (with space)? Then maybe it will heat that mainly and not the room. The other thing I was thinking about was to hang a heat lamp either ceramic or other about 12 to 18 inches up. But was worried about temp regulation, but have seen some say to put a dimmer in line to "control" it. Just my 2 cents.
