    They're more like different lines; different people bred the original animals, so someone gets a hatchling from africa, and another person gets another hatchling from africa, then they breed those snakes to get the same offspring, and both end up with a line of snakes which are very similar.

    In the case of Butters and Lessers, if the snake has two genes for lesser, it will be an all white blue eyed snake, if it has 2 genes for butter it will be an all whote blue eyed snake, if it has one gene for lesser and one gene for butter it will be an all white blue eyed snake. Thus they are, by most people's reasoning, the same gene.

    Differences between the two are typically minor, and likely result from other genes than the lesser/butter/blue eyed white snake gene
