Re: What were your first projects? How did you get into breeding?
I agree with Jodan. There are some pretty cool things you can make in the BEL complex. You can never go wrong with Mystics, phantoms, and specials if you pick up a Mojave (and they won't break the bank). Ultimately, you'd have to think about what you'd like to produce. Personally, my favorite morphs in the BEL complex are Mystic Potion/ Purple Passion.
As to what got me into this hobby? I've always had a special interest in genetics. I've kept and bred freshwater angelfish and Discus for 15 years before being bitten by the BP bug.
I am only a hobbyist with the intent of making a few things I like and possibly selling a few BPs that aren't held back. I've been in the hobby for about 2 years, starting out with 0.2 het albinos and a Spinner Blast 50% het albino. Next breeding season will be the first time I breed my guys as the 2 spider girls I acquired a year ago are making weight and I'd like to prove them out (those are 50% het albino).
Personally, I like recessives. But I love things with contrasting colors.

Back in 2006 I started with a few normals, a pair of het Pied, a pastel, a black pastel and a spider those were expensive back than.
Now my main focus are Pied, Clown and Hypo combos.
