    I am not sure about death by stress, but I am almost sure that stress can and will affect the immune system (as it does in humans) therefore the snake would be more "exposed" (for lack of a better term) to diseases, so the snake could become ill very easily and since the immune system is not that strong, because of the stress, the disease would evolve very easily and rapidly, and if not treated soon and firmly could result in the snake's (almost sudden) death.
