LOL ... 6 responses is not a "big ordeal" around here ... we've had some good 11 and 12 PAGE "discussions" in the past ... you'll have to do better next time! :P

I got my guy from a pet store for $99 (Canadian) and aside from him not eating the first 2 months (which may have been as much my fault as his, being a n00b owner) he's been an angel. Perfect temperment, doesn't mind being handled, eats like clockwork, perfect sheds... there are just as many good experiences with pet store balls as there are bad. Don't have a clue if they were CB, CH, or WC though (didn't know to ask back then). I've had no problem with parasites or him taking F/T because that's what he was on at the shop.

Of course, knowing what I know now, I'm looking to breeders for my next purchase.

Not from where I'm sitting ... I can't tell you how many emails, PM's, and phone calls I get from people looking for help for their sick and dying pet store ball pythons .... I think you hear about the good stories because people are proud to have a healthy animal .... the thousands of pet store ball pythons that die every year from problems that just couldn't be prevented are a different story .... many people don't want to openly admit that their snake died because they feel it reflects poorly on them.

As I said, they certainly can and have worked out great for people, but there is still an inherent risk with buying and animal with an unknown background. Especially for someone with little to no experience with these animals.

I agree that there are fewer lucky ones. Think of all of the bps that die before they even reach the store. I'm sure the ones on display are only a small percentage of those that were actually intended for sale.

Me too! We could start with yer choice: religious beliefs; republicans Vs. democrats; pepsi VS. coke... etc.

Note: I do not actually think we should discuss any of those topics. They are volatile.

Lead to a lot of flaming and ad hominem attacks - just gets people angry at each other and doesnt do anything real productive. Religion and politics are chief among those. Pesonally I love "debating" these topics - this just isnt the right venue for them.

The herp and keeper ones however are fine so long as folks dont resort to those personal attacks.

Actually, I'm really only here to talk ball pythons ... so thanks, but no thanks. ;)

Here's my .02 cents worth lol. Our snake was pet store bought and though it's been a good experience thus far I doubt we'd do the pet store route again for a couple of reasons.

    1) There is zero background information on this snake as far as genetics, previous sheds, previous feedings, etc. Yes they "told" us she'd eaten and shed and was captive born but without actual records we knew we were taking a higher risk for problems.

    2) We may have saved some money on purchase and shipping but with a snake like this any savings will be used for vet visits for confirmation of health and sexing anyways.

As I said, we've been lucky with Baby but for future purchases (especially if we want to purchase hets) I'd rather go with an experienced, known breeder than rely on the luck of the draw again.

I got Rebel from a Rescue Facility ,I got Roxy from a pet store and i got little Ruby from a local corn snake breeder.

I havent ever had any problems with Roxy (from the petsotre) exept for a couple bad sheds in the beginning .

I would never buy from a petstore again though, there is just too much bad stuff that you could pottentially have to deal with.....nobody wants a problem snake....at least not me !!

If it matters, in the ball python trade, "captive born" is not the same thing as "captive bred".
