Re: Inhumane Society..
I can't stand when these so called 'humane societies' claim that snakes and other wonderful captives should be left in the wild. You could argue that a snake makes a better pet than even a dog or cat.
I'm sorry if I rant, this just is one of the things that maddens me the most. Animals are my one true passion, and these people are trying to make it so I can't do what I love. I'm sure most of you agree.

Actually we do support the animal shelter in the county next to ours which is very animal AND human friendly.
The one in our county is just, how do I say this, just plain wierd. If you go in to adopt a dog, they won't let you handle it, stating it "upsets" the dogs to be removed from the cage and then returned to it. Their volunteers just seem to sit in the dog's enclosure rather than doing any real socializing of these poor dogs but then if you can't take a dog out of it's cage, how can you really socialize it and avoid cage mania.
However, they want to charge you almost $150.00 for a stray that is not spayed/neutered unless it came in that way but is micro-chipped. To me I think the issue of unwanted puppies is more important than a chip but perhaps that's just me.
As far as feral cats, they won't do a thing. We have a beautiful feral female that lives in the forest. It's up to me to trap her I guess as they refuse but will quite nicely rent me a trap (how kind of them to care so much....arrgh). Each year she produces more kittens to be wild too. Sad, because they are a kill shelter so I know if I trap her, she will have a very "short" visit at the local animal shelter. For now I just try to keep an eye on her and feed her when I can. She's in lovely shape so I don't know if trapping her just to have her euthanized is what I should do, but I hate to see her running wild and breeding like that.
Sorry for the rant.

We had a problem like that at the house my family used to live at. It was harassing our housecat and seemed to be producing more wild kittens each year. After talking it over with our vet, he said he'd split the bill with us to get her spayed. We trapped her in our garage one day, and the story ends with her being released and no more wild kittens the next season.
Sounds like u care a lot about that cat. What does it cost to get a cat spayed, $80 or so? I'd shell that out for a good cause any day.

Re: Inhumane Society..
We have an animal birth control clinic here, and to neuter male cats I believe it costs around $20, with females being $25-$30. Dogs are $30-$35 I think. They have only had a problem with one dog since they've been in business, but it turned out that she had epilepsy, so no harm on their part. Trapping and spaying/neutering would be a great thing to do, since there isn't any killing involved and hopefully no one would be offended. Heaven forbid you neuter an animal and help rid the planet of unwanted animals. Some people are just so uptight about their animal's "parts", LoL.

Re: Inhumane Society..
You're not kidding about people obsessing about animal's "parts". They have those fake implants for dogs who are neutered. You can have fake testicles for you dog too! Those people just need help! :omg:

Re: Inhumane Society..
That whole thing about fake testes for dogs, just makes me laugh! It could get kind of deceptful too; say that dog ends up in a humane society and they think he is unneutered!
I have a real issue with feral cats. Part of me wants to love them and take them all in and become my town's next crazy cat lady. But realistically, I honestly think they should be shot on sight. They do huge amounts of damage to local, indeginous animals, and half the time they kill and do not even eat the meat of their kills! Baby birds and adult frogs are only a smidgen of the naturally occuring creatures that make up the diet of the feral cat.
Personally though, if I had a feral cat I was attached to around my house and did not want to kill it, I would continue feeding it food, until it got so fat that it did not want to hunt anymore! Realistically though, I would just have to emotionally distance myself from it and let someone shoot it, to save the lives of the native wildlife. I know I might sound evil, but the true evil in this situation, in my opinion, is the careless human who let the cat be feral to begin with.

Thank you for posting this Marla. When I write about working at the CT Humane Society, I always feel the need to write after it in parenthasies "not affiliated with HSUS.
Sadly the story that started this thread happens all too often.

Re: Inhumane Society..
Thanks for the great advice re our local feral cat (not to take over the thread by any means here). We actually helped trap a breeding feral female years ago, collected donations, had her spayed and released her as she would not tame down.
I have access to a humane live trap unfortunately we have so many skunks and possums in the area I'm more likely to get one of those rather than the cat. I'm going to figure a way tho. I can't stand to see more kittens born out in the forest again. As far as wildlife, yes feral cats do harm certainly. Where we live tho there is so very much natural forest and so few predators that I'm fairly confortable with this cat being a reasonably low impact.
I'm going to phone around to the local vets and see if any will volunteer to spay this little female or can recommend a private rehabilitator for her (thanks for the suggestions!.

I think that's great! At the very least you can probably work out a discount and get some neighbors to throw in a few bucks so that it's not all on you.
