ANY on/off is going to have about a 5 degree swing as it is usually +/- 2 degrees so if you figure 2 below + set temp+ 2 above.... Thats about 5 degrees. I have several and havent had problems with them but I also trust my IR gun more than the sticker with numbers on it.

Ik the Herpstat and VE are proportional since I own a couple Herpstat and a few VE and yes they can be switched to on/off. I was recommending them as a thermostat to buy if the op could afford it. I also recommended the on/off style inkbird itc-308. None of these have to do with what I was saying was junk. The item I was saying is junk is the ZooMed reptitemp 500r, all my test with it were done with 3 temp guns and an acurite. The test confirmed for 2 different zoomed reptitemp 500r units that if it is set at 90 that it would drop 5 degrees and then once it reached 85 it would start heating but it would not shut off once it reached 90, sometimes at 93+ sometimes only after 3 degree rise. My point was that the 2 units I tested did not hold set temp and would only consistently start heating once it dropped 5 degrees from wherever it shut off but the shut off point was not always the same making it unpredictable and therefore something I would not consider safe using for any reptile. This is my experience with this product and I'm sharing my experience so if someone does buy it to make sure it is working properly (as someone should with any product) so a herp doesn't get hurt. Also IMO is if it would of worked properly I personally wouldn't of used it bc I like to keep my temps constant and 5 degree drop IMO is to much of a drop especially when you can buy better quality units for less money that only drop 1 degree. In case you didn't know exactly which thermostat I was saying was junk here is the link.
