If you can get frozen you should do that IMO just thaw, heat and feed. Live can be done successfully but you do need to know what your doing and react the correct way when you need to. I suggest getting some advice on live feeding or switch to frozen or read up on co2 and build a chamber.

That seems more like a weanling or small. I was under the impression you were talking about a hopper mouse. Only bc I've never heard of hopper rat.

I went to exclusively live feeding. I feed in separate tubs for this so I can watch and intervene if need be. I always keep a knife or something similar if they get a bad strike to stick in the rats mouth to bite on (kind of like for people something painful must be done biting a towel or similar just happens to be harder because a rat can bite through steel) occasionally they'll get a good scratch in. Happened to my female a couple weeks ago near her neck. A couple sheds will fix her up. If you're gonna stay on live (my preferred method) always watch until the movement stops.

I've had aggressive or curious rats want to crawl on mine or they kind of boop them and if they're not ready to strike at this time it can kill the option of that feed and you'll be holding a live rat a few days (be prepared for this)

    Good luck!
