They can become very sensitive to disturbance as they get closer to laying. My girls love their hides, but I remove them after the pre-lay shed so that I can give them a quick glance as needed without having to cause any undue stress. I also paper the fronts of their tubs, because they live in a room I use a lot, and without the hides, a visual block provides a measure of security. I did have one female go under her newspaper for a fist clutch -- and she laid down there -- though now all my females are on cypress. . . . They can make nests and feel comfortable that way. Also, better humidity.
Thank you so much for your input I'm glad this topic is getting some answers since it's not discussed often at all. I'll try again today but remove both hides this time and see what happens. Hopefully I'm not stressing her out too much.

Re: Hide for mother about to lay soon?
While 98% of my animals do not use hides those that do only do so outside breeding season.
Obviously during breeding season I remove their hides so they do not hide from the males. Hides are only put back once they lay, I also do not provide a laying box.

Re: Hide for mother about to lay soon?
Just wanted to update, I pulled both of the hides and put a suction vine in there to give her a little extra cover and she seems to be doing fine and is spread out and looks pretty comfy in her tub :) thanks for all the advice guys. Can't wait to update again with egg pics!
