You are right that breeding back to a parent would yield the best results. It would be interesting if it were a new mutation but not likely. Are the parents related, by any chance?

This wouldn't be unheard of. It's exactly how new genes pop up, like for instance blue eyes in humans.

If it is a spontaneous mutation, you could reproduce it, because he carried it and would theoretically pass it on to some of his kids. You would just have to do some F2 crossing with his offspring, or breed some of his daughters back to him.
Even if it's spontaneous, if it is genetic, it could still eventually be reproduced with careful breeding effort.
