Did you get a digital thermometer with a probe and put the probe on the floor directly under the hot spot? I would also get another digital thermometer with probe and put it on the cool side floor so you know the temp is good there as well.

With humidity just remember it won't be the same throughout the viv. Probe placement is important.
if your using something like sphagnum moss or anything that gives really high humidity if your ambient humidity is 65 or 70 % then the humidity in the hot hide is probably higher. Possibly even wet so keep an eye on it.
    Good Luck.

I have a tank and use a ceramic heat lamp and a regular heat bulb (both on thermostats) to maintain temps. I have cypress mulch, the breeder had kept him on something different, and changing him to cypress was no problem, so you may be able to change away from aspen, just give him time to adjust. For humidity, I use a warm wet towel (situated between, NOT touching the lamps), and then cover that with aluminum foil. Without the foil over the towels all the humidity still escapes. With the towels, I usually only have to re-dampen every 24-36 hours keeping between 55-65% (depending on the weather - rainy days / humid days I can let the towels dry completely and still maintain 50-55% humidity)
