Why not just use RHP's inside your PVC cages ?

Mostly because I would like for them to have the belly heat.

RHP's creates a basking spot that they can lay on for belly heat. Just put a tile under it or even just the floor will be warm enough. If the cage isn't too tall, it works out better in my opinion. I had both in mine for a while but found I didn't need it.

Is the Herpstat 4 t-stat an option?

Lizardlicks read this, I went this route and find it to work great in a PVC cage. http://pro-products.com/pro-heat/

I started using heat tape for a hot spot and rhp for ambient temps but realized its overkill and a rhp alone works quite well

Is the ambient gradient still good on a 48" long? I was looking into grabbing some AP T8s if they're still on sale when the tax return comes in.

Also, i have looked up and down that Pro Heat page all day and can't find find any price or how to order.... Which brings me to my next question, what's everyone's personal preference for brand? Cheapest seems to be the RBIs if ordered 3 at a time, but cheapest isn't always the best deal when considering longevity or performance.

The room my cage is in is 70 degrees , my cage is 6' x 2' x 1' high and the cold side stays around 79-81 with a hot spot of 89

Yup....you have to match the RHP to your needs. Room temp and cage size needs that is. A 80 watt may be better for a longer cage. I have a 40 watt in a 36x24x12. I can't stand heat tape. My cages came from PVC cages with the 40watt Reptile Basic RHP's in them.
