Ya I always make sure to pop the top so I'm not reading another surface. If my substrate is too thick, then how much should I actually have in there? I'll also be switching soon to something that holds moisture a little better.

You can put what you want for substrate (within reason), but keep in mind your snake is going to burrow.

You want the hot spot to be hottest right where the UTH is under the enclosure. The floor right above that should be 90F (or whatever you want for your hotspot).

Get the hotspot on the floor dialed in to 90F (or whatever you want), then put your substrate on at whatever depth you want (within reason). Your snake will burrow if it needs to be warmer. But no matter what he does, the hottest he can get is still safe for him (90F, for example).

Ok I went to the pet store and all they had was the zoomed thermostat which I've heard isn't very good especially for $60. So I'm going to go home and look at ordering one of the ones above. I just want one that's reliable but not overly priced either.

I put the dimmer switch on his heating pad and got it down to 90 for now while i wait on his thermostat to arrive. Hes back to laying in his hides again, particularly the small box that his light bulb came in. The only problem I'm having now is that the accurite hygrometer shows 75, the dial one on the tank shows 25% and the zilla probe i put in there on the hot end shows 35%. He is getting ready to shed and i want to make sure the humidity is high enough for him.
