It's been awhile, but I believe I cut the tape they had sent lengthwise to make it more useful. Since then, I've purchased my own roll from Home Depot. It's amazing the many uses for the stuff that I've found.

I had also bought a roll before I moved but I didn't take it with me, what else have you used it for? And would you recommend taping all the edges of the heat tape?

I did three sides - the side furthest from the clips and the two sides. You just need enough to hold it in place for a little bit should you ever need to lift the T8 and move it for any reason. Once it's in place where you want it, it doesn't take much adhesive to do the job - the pressure from being sandwiched in does most of the work.

As far as other uses, I've done anything from using it for its intended purpose (other than in the snake room - actual A/C work) to a few other honey-do projects. My wife has also used it a couple of times for its "shiny-ness" in some random crafty things she does too. For as much as the roll was, we'd better be getting some good use out of it!

What about a distance from walls for proper ventilation?

In my first reply. ;) I had them against a wall, so maybe only a couple inches behind it at the most. I would think that you wouldn't need much more than that - just enough for a little bit of airflow.

Oh im sorry i missed that. So i found a perfect piece at ikea. Except it is a hideous white. Is it bad or dangerous to put the cage and heat tape on top of a cloth table cloth?

I also found another. Which is even more perfect but its made out of melamine foil which i am concerned about whether it would be dangerous sitting the heattape on it
