Ambient Temps

    Thanks.

I assume that cages in a rack would tend to have higher ambient temps, since the bins tend to be shallower, and they'd be surrounded by other heated bins.

How does the probe work in a thermostat? I mean, where would you put it in a rack? Just in one of the bins?

I place my temp probes directly on the heat tape in as close to the center of the rack as possible.

Because the heat tape is just used to heat the "hot spot" I generally control the ambient temps and humidity in the whole room to make sure the snakes have the proper environment. It's much easier to do it for an entire room than it is for each individual box.

When you have a bunch of racks in a room (especially freedom breeders) the heat tapes throw off a ton of heat anyway, so heating the room isn't actually too difficult.

Good thing since I have to live with my mom who insists on keeping the house COLD all the time!

I read one plan for a rack and they had the heat tape situated along the back of the rack (ie not heating from below) it was kind of set up so that the bins would slide back and the heat tape would act as the back of the shelving. I suppose this wouldn't be very efficient though, right? Since heat rises..

I'm brainstorming here. My dad promised to help me build a rack for Christmas..

Personally, I do not like back heat. I've used it before and it was too hard to get the temps right. After trying just about everything over the last 25 years, I prefer to stick with belly heat.

If they're still around when it comes time to get another ball python, I'd love to take one off your hands. :)
