    Don't do 6" you won't get any type of gradient. It' will be hot and hotter the snake won't be able to escape the heat at all. 3" is plenty just cover the sides and back and you should be fine. I'm in PA as well and my old place over the winter was 61 degrees from February till mid April and we have both back heat and 3" belly neither had an issue keeping temps right.

    So even if I turn the temperature down on the thermostat and monitor the heat inside of the tubs with a heat gun the 6" will still be too much for them???

    I think what he meant was that getting the ambient to where it needs to be will leave no gradient. No hot side or cool side. This will be because the 6in covers most of the bottom of the tub. So therefore whether on the hot end of the acceptable threshold or the cool, the snake has no where to go if it wants to regulate itself. Meaning the whole tub is one temperature. I live in new England and will never build a rack that is not enclosed because of the winter. The only way i would is if i moved into a facility.
