My 55 gallon is for dart frogs so no need to supplement with heat, my lizards enclosures all use basking bulbs so not an issue. For my Childrens Python I still use a heat mat and just have a very thin layer of substrate over the heat mat and put a rock on top so the rock gets heated, then the rest of the cage gradually slopes up.
