You've got a nice collection as it stands and I'm NOT getting anything new either.

I think the O/P will certainly welcome the opinions/advice of folks who own the 2 snakes he's looking into, and it doesn't hurt that we also have royal pythons and can compare them as well.

You all have helped a ton, I definitely think that at this point it depends on if I want to breed them....if I want to breed I'm going to go with the hog island but if not I'm going for the irian jaya!

I have an IJ / Jag jungle cross carpet and 3 boas (a CA motley male... similar in size to a hogg island, a Bci hypo male, and a Bca male) and also started out with BPs and smaller snakes.

I would say you need to decide based on what you want in the snake... If you want a slower moving, yet fun to handle, climbing snake, the boa might be a better pick (and IMO it is a good step between BP and carpet)... Just make sure you specifically look for a calm hogg island.. some of the smaller boa locals can be fiesty. Carpets are faster and even better climbers... They can be unpredictable and IMO are more difficult to start than your average boa... They are VERY nippy as babies and take a long time to tame down. I've had my baby for about 5 months now and still use a hook to remove him from his enclosure.

For my situation, I'm glad that I owned the boas first... although arboreal, they are slower to react and move than the carpet and as others said, you can look away for a few seconds when handling them... There's no such "down time" when handling a carpet... Always on the move.

Either way you are sure to get a great animal and you probably will end up with both, but if I was choosing, I'd go with a boa first. Also, if you want something smaller, make sure you get a male hogg island... they stay a lot leaner and can be shorter than females.
